Cambridge IELTS books: which volume to buy first
Short answer: buy the newest volume you can find, not the cheapest one and not the complete set. Each Cambridge IELTS book contains four real past papers and very little else, so the tests inside it are the product. A new volume appears most years, and the newest one is the closest thing to the test you will sit.
If money is tight, get one recent volume and borrow the rest from a library. The differences between two volumes published a year apart are small. The difference between a recent volume and one from a decade ago is enormous.
What is actually inside one of these books
Cambridge IELTS volumes are published by Cambridge University Press and Assessment, the organisation that writes the IELTS papers. That is the whole reason they are worth money: the reading passages, listening recordings, writing tasks, and speaking questions are real retired test material, not imitations.
Each standard volume gives you:
- four complete practice tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
- an answer key with explanations attached to the answers
- audio for all the Listening sections
- sample Writing answers at different band levels, so you can compare a Band 6 answer with a Band 8 answer
- transcripts of the Listening recordings, which is the most underused part of the book
There is no teaching in it. No strategies, no vocabulary lists, no study plan. If you want to be taught, this is the wrong purchase. If you want four honest measurements of where you stand, nothing else is as accurate.
The trap in buying the set
Search any marketplace and you will find bundles of many volumes at what looks like a bargain. There are two problems with that.
First, the old volumes are old tests. The early volumes were designed for a version of the exam that has since been revised, and the writing tasks in them are not a good guide to what you will be asked. Practising on them trains habits you then have to unlearn.
Second, nobody finishes a set of twenty. Four tests per volume is around eighty full mock exams. That is not a plan, that is a shelf. The people who improve are the ones who take four tests properly, mark them honestly, and fix what went wrong. That is one volume's worth of material done well.
How the options compare
| Option | What you get | Who it suits | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| The newest Cambridge IELTS volume | Four of the newest real papers, answer key, audio, sample Writing answers | Anyone sitting the test in the next six months | Buy the Academic or General Training edition that matches your test. They are separate books. |
| One or two volumes older | The same structure, one or two years older | Anyone who wants a second volume after finishing the newest one | Compare listings rather than trusting a bundle price. Prices vary widely by seller. |
| The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS | Official tests plus actual teaching: question types, strategies, a guided first test | Someone who has not sat the test before and wants instruction as well as papers | It is a teaching book with tests in it, not a paper collection. Do not buy it expecting the same thing. |
| A library copy | The same book, free, on loan | Anyone in a Canadian city with a library card | Popular volumes have waiting lists, so reserve early rather than the week before your test. |
Prices are not quoted here on purpose. Book prices move weekly and differ by country, so check the live listing and treat any price in a review, including this one, as out of date.
What to do, in order
- Reserve the newest Cambridge IELTS volume at your local library first. It costs nothing and it tells you whether you need the book at all.
- Sit one full test under exam conditions, timing included, before buying anything else.
- Mark it properly using the answer key, and read the sample Writing answers for the same tasks you wrote.
- Only then decide. If your problem is that you do not know how to answer the question types, buy the Official Guide. If your problem is that you run out of time and lose marks under pressure, you need more timed papers, not more teaching.
- Buy the newest volume rather than the set. Add volumes one at a time as you finish them.
The book is a measuring instrument. Most people who fail to improve bought the instrument and never used it, and almost nobody needs twenty of them.
If writing is the skill costing you marks, start with our IELTS Task 2 guide, then compare your essay line by line with the official band descriptors at ielts.org before buying another paper collection. A book of past papers will not tell you which criterion you are losing marks on.

Frequently asked questions
Which Cambridge IELTS book should I buy first?
Buy the newest volume you can find, not the cheapest one and not the complete set. Each book contains four real past papers, so the tests inside are the product. One recent volume, done properly, is worth more than a shelf of old ones.
Are the Cambridge IELTS books real past papers?
Yes. They are published by Cambridge University Press and Assessment, the organisation that produces IELTS, and each standard volume contains four complete retired papers with an answer key, listening audio, and sample writing answers.
Should I buy the full Cambridge IELTS set?
Usually no. Old volumes reflect older versions of the test, and few people finish twenty books. Four tests per volume is about eighty full mocks in a set. Buy one recent volume, finish it, then decide whether you need another.
Can I get Cambridge IELTS books from a library?
Often yes. Many Canadian public libraries hold recent Cambridge IELTS volumes, and popular ones have waiting lists, so reserve early rather than the week before your test.
Use one paper properly
Take one timed test, mark it honestly, then work on the exact question type that cost you the most marks instead of buying another book.
