IELTS Reading Paragraph Mapping for Academic Passages

Build passage maps that speed up answer location and reduce re-reading time by 40%.

What this lesson covers

IELTS Reading Paragraph Mapping for Academic Passages gives you a repeatable system for answering IELTS reading questions accurately under time pressure. You will see which steps to follow, which errors to avoid, and how to check your answers quickly.

Examples

Weak approach

Read the whole passage first, then go back to find answers. Spend equal time on every question. When uncertain, guess from memory.

Stronger approach

Read the question first. Identify the keyword. Scan the passage for that keyword or its paraphrase. Verify the surrounding sentence matches the question meaning before choosing.

How It Works

Question-first reading system
Pattern Meaning / Use Example
Read question first Know what you are looking for before reading Question: 'What is the main cause?' -- look for cause language: due to, because of, led to.
Identify keyword Pick the most specific, searchable word in the question 'archaeological site' is more specific than 'place' -- scan for it.
Paraphrase check Verify the passage uses different words for the same idea Question: 'harmful' -- passage says 'damaging' -- these match in meaning.

Steps to follow for every question

  • Step 1: Read the question and underline the most specific keyword.
  • Step 2: Scan the passage for that keyword or its synonym.
  • Step 3: Read the two sentences around the keyword carefully.
  • Step 4: Verify the answer matches the question meaning, not just the keyword.

Common Mistakes

Practice Lab

Practice

Self-mark each task. You can retry until every answer is correct.

Score: 0/3

1. Quick pick

The question asks if coral reefs were “damaged.” The passage says they were “harmed.” What does this mean?

2. Build it

Put the question-first reading steps in the correct order.

Tap a chunk to move it between the bank and answer area.

3. Sort it

Sort each reading behaviour: Efficient or Inefficient?

Read the question first, then scan only the relevant paragraph.

Read the entire passage before looking at any questions.

Verify that the passage sentence matches the question meaning before choosing.

Choose the answer that contains the same word as the question.

Why It Matters

IELTS reading tests your ability to locate specific information and understand implied meaning quickly. Every question you answer correctly adds directly to your band score. The question-first system in this lesson prevents the two most common causes of score loss: spending too long on one question and choosing answers based on surface keyword matching rather than meaning.
