Precise Evaluation Vocabulary for Advanced Responses

Use nuanced stance language -- acknowledge, argue, contend, refute -- to elevate your score band.

What this lesson covers

Precise Evaluation Vocabulary for Advanced Responses builds your word bank for IELTS and CELPIP writing and speaking tasks. You will learn which words to use, how to use them in context, and which combinations (collocations) sound natural to examiners.

Examples

Generic vocabulary

This is a big problem. Many people are affected. The government must do something about it and make things better.

Precise vocabulary

This constitutes a significant challenge. A substantial proportion of the population is affected. Authorities are urged to implement targeted measures to alleviate the situation.

What changed: Generic words (big, many, do something) were replaced with precise academic vocabulary that demonstrates lexical range without sounding forced.

How It Works

High-value word pairs and collocations
Pattern Meaning / Use Example
raise + awareness draw attention to a problem or cause Campaigns have been launched to raise awareness of mental health issues.
address + issue/concern/problem deal with something seriously The government must address the issue of housing affordability.
implement + measures/policies/strategies put plans into action Schools should implement evidence-based strategies to improve literacy rates.
contribute to + noun be a factor in causing or supporting something Remote working contributes to reduced carbon emissions.
pose + a challenge/threat/risk present something negative Climate change poses a significant threat to coastal communities.

How to use these words safely

  • Use each collocation as a unit — do not swap the verb (you “raise awareness”, not “increase awareness”).
  • Choose a word you can use accurately — a simpler precise word beats a complex wrong one.
  • Vary your vocabulary within a paragraph — do not use “significant” three times.

Why It Matters

Lexical Resource is worth 25% of your writing score and is assessed in speaking too. Examiners look for variety, precision, and natural word choice — not difficult words used incorrectly. The collocations in this lesson are all found in Band 7-8 model answers. Using even three of them correctly per essay can lift your Lexical Resource score by 0.5 points.
