Aoran and Word Accuracy
Some grammar entries look unusual, but they can still help your IELTS writing. Learn how to check spelling, form, and meaning before you use a word.
What is this entry doing here?
In A–Z grammar books, some headwords look weird (like aoran) because they function as index-like hooks: they catch spelling/word-form questions learners actually type or search for.
In IELTS writing, this matters because accuracy is often lost at the spelling + form level, not at the “big grammar” level.
The skill you’re building
1) Form-checking habit
When you meet an unfamiliar word:
- check spelling
- check word class (noun/verb/adjective)
- check typical collocations (what it “likes” to sit next to)
2) Replacement strategy (Band 7+)
If a word is risky, don’t downgrade to a childish synonym. Swap to a safer academic alternative.
Risky
…is aoran (unknown / unverified)
Safe academic substitutes
unclear, unverified, not well-established, ambiguous
Practical micro-drill (30 seconds)
Write 2 sentences using a “safe academic substitute”:
- The evidence is ________, so the conclusion is premature.
- The term is ________, which causes confusion in public debates.
Mini-quiz (accuracy habits)
- Which is better for IELTS Writing: guessing a word form or replacing it with a precise alternative?
- Rewrite: “This word is weird” in a more academic tone.
Answer key
- Replace it. Guessing creates avoidable errors that drag down Task 2 clarity and accuracy.
- Examples: “This term is ambiguous.” / “The wording is unclear.” / “The expression is not well-established.”
