IELTS • Writing Band 7+ 2026-02-28

A Bit and A Bit Of

We use a bit and a bit of when we mean a small amount. In IELTS writing, this is useful, but too much of it can make your ideas weak and unclear.

The core meaning

  • a bit = slightly / to a small degree (often modifies adjectives/adverbs)
  • a bit of = a small amount of + noun

a bit + adjective/adverb

It is a bit expensive.

She spoke a bit too quickly.

a bit of + noun

We need a bit of evidence.

There was a bit of confusion.

Better academic alternatives

Use these when you want “a bit” but in a more academic tone:

Upgrade options
Pattern Meaning / Use Example
slightly / somewhat + adj mild degree (academic) The results were somewhat inconsistent.
to a limited extent controlled limitation This policy worked to a limited extent.
a modest amount of + noun small quantity (formal) A modest amount of funding improved access.

Practice: rewrite (Band 7+ tone)

Rewrite more academically:

  1. It is a bit hard to measure.
  2. There is a bit of pollution in cities.
  3. Some people are a bit worried.

Mini-quiz

  1. Pick the best IELTS option: A) a bit dangerous, B) somewhat hazardous, C) a bit risky a bit dangerous.
  2. Correct: “We need a bit evidences.”
Answer key
  1. B (precise + academic).
  2. ”We need a bit of evidence.” (evidence is usually uncountable)
