Be Able To in IELTS Writing

Can is useful, but be able to helps you talk about ability in past, present, and future time. This makes your writing clearer and less repetitive.

Why IELTS candidates should care

“Can” is fine — but overusing it makes your writing repetitive.
”Be able to” lets you express ability across time more flexibly.

Time forms (high-frequency for IELTS)
Pattern Meaning / Use Example
can general present ability People can access information instantly.
was/were able to managed to do something (often one-time success) After the reforms, low-income families were able to afford childcare.
have/has been able to ability achieved up to now Many countries have been able to reduce infant mortality.
will be able to future ability If schools invest in training, teachers will be able to personalize feedback.
