About and Around

About can mean topic, and both about and around can mean approximate number. This lesson shows when each meaning is clear and natural in IELTS tasks.

Two meanings you must separate

1) Topic meaning (about = concerning)

  • This essay is about climate policy.

2) Approximation meaning (about / around = approximately)

  • About/Around 60% of residents commute by car.
Common IELTS-friendly approximators

roughly + number/% semi-formal, common in Task 1/2 Roughly half of respondents disagreed.
