Abstract Nouns
Abstract nouns help you talk about ideas like growth, risk, and change. This lesson teaches simple patterns so your IELTS writing sounds clear and formal.
What is an abstract noun?
An abstract noun is a word for an idea, not a physical thing. Words like growth, risk, pressure, and freedom are abstract nouns.
In IELTS writing, abstract nouns can make your style more academic. But keep sentences short and clear, so the meaning is easy to follow.
Concrete style
Many people are poor in cities.
Abstract noun style
Urban poverty remains a serious problem.
Useful patterns
| Pattern | Meaning / Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| noun + is + adjective | describe an idea | Social pressure is intense in large cities. |
| noun + has increased/decreased | show change | Public awareness has increased in recent years. |
| noun + leads to + noun | show cause and result | Income inequality leads to social tension. |
When NOT to use abstract nouns
If your sentence already sounds heavy, use a simple verb and a concrete example. Balance is better than difficult style.
