Accepting and Refusing Clearly
You can be polite and still be clear. This lesson gives simple sentence patterns for acceptance and refusal without sounding rude or weak.
Why this language is useful
In IELTS writing, you often accept one idea and refuse another. Good writers do this politely and directly.
If your language is too soft, your opinion is weak. If your language is too strong, it sounds aggressive. The goal is clear and respectful tone.
Accepting
I agree that public transport should be cheaper.
Refusing
However, I do not agree that cars should be banned completely.
Useful patterns
| Pattern | Meaning / Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I agree that + clause | accept an idea | I agree that schools need more digital tools. |
| I do not agree that + clause | refuse an idea politely | I do not agree that exams should be removed. |
| While I accept X, I disagree with Y | balanced opinion | While I accept online learning, I disagree with fully remote schooling. |
Use this in IELTS Task 2
In your introduction, state your main position clearly. In body paragraphs, accept one point and then explain why you reject another point.
