Advanced Passive Voice

Learn to use the advanced passive voice to emphasize actions and results effectively.

Advanced Passive Voice shifts the focus from the subject to the action or result. This lesson helps you decide when to use passive voice for clarity and emphasis, and when active voice might be more appropriate.

Examples

Example 1

IncorrectPeople recycle more plastic in this city every year.

BetterMore plastic is recycled in this city every year.

The passive voice emphasizes the action of recycling rather than the people doing it.

Example 2

IncorrectThe committee will announce the results tomorrow.

BetterThe results will be announced tomorrow.

The passive voice is used to focus on the results rather than the committee.

How It Works

Meaning

The passive voice emphasizes the action or its recipient rather than the subject performing the action. It is formed using a form of "be" followed by a past participle. At the B2 level, mastering this structure is crucial for emphasizing results or when the actor is unknown or irrelevant.

Use it when

  • You want to highlight the action or result rather than the actor.
  • The actor is unknown or not important to the context.
  • In formal writing, to maintain objectivity.
  • In scientific or technical writing, where the process or result is more critical than the person doing it.
