Both, Either, Neither – Intermediate

B1 lesson on Both, Either, Neither with teacher-style explanation, guided practice, and topic-linked review.

Topic Explanation and Use

Core idea

These paired forms only work well when both sides match.

Correlative pairs such as both ... and, either ... or, and neither ... nor connect two matching choices. The structure works best when both parts of the pair are parallel.

Use these pairs when you want to add, limit, or balance options clearly. The reader should be able to predict the second half once the first half begins.

At B1 level, build one correct base sentence first, then add detail without breaking grammar control.

Use it here

  • Keep the grammar parallel on both sides of the pair.
  • Make sure the verb agrees with the real subject in either/or and neither/nor patterns.
  • Use the pair only when you are linking two similar sentence parts.

Watch it work

Either the library or the classrooms are open this evening.

  • Keep the grammar parallel on both sides of the pair.
  • Check the verb agreement after either/or or neither/nor.
  • Make sure the pair links two similar sentence parts.
  • Read the whole sentence to confirm that the balance feels natural.
