CELPIP Reading Detail Location Discipline

Intro

Detail questions look easy, but they often punish careless reading. Many test takers find the right area of the passage and still lose the mark because they miss one small condition like a date, a limitation, or a contrast.

What Strong Readers Do

• They locate the answer zone first.
• They reread only the proof line and one nearby line.
• They check restrictions such as “only,” “except,” “before,” “after,” and “unless.”
• They choose only after the full condition is clear.

Common Mistakes

• Choosing after seeing one familiar word.
• Ignoring the exact time, number, or condition in the sentence.
• Reading too broadly and mixing one detail with another nearby detail.

Fix Pattern

1. Find the keyword that locates the area.
2. Read the proof line slowly.
3. Ask: what exact condition decides the answer?
4. Eliminate any option that changes one small fact.

Example

Passage: “Pickup will happen 15 minutes earlier on May 11 because the building closes early.”

Weak choice: “Pickup is earlier every Saturday.”

Strong choice: “Pickup is earlier on one specific date.”

2. For five detail questions, underline the exact proof line.
3. Write the deciding condition in three words or fewer.
4. Check whether your chosen answer preserves that condition exactly.
