Intro
Main-idea questions are not asking for one detail. They are asking for the writer’s overall point, the job of a paragraph, or the final position of the text. Students often lose these marks because they choose an answer that is true in one sentence but too narrow for the whole passage.
What To Notice
- Is the paragraph introducing, explaining, contrasting, warning, or concluding?
- Which sentence carries the real claim?
- Which answer is broad enough to cover the whole paragraph but not so broad that it becomes vague?
Common Mistakes
- Choosing the most memorable example instead of the main point.
- Treating a supporting detail as the writer’s final position.
- Ignoring the final paragraph when the passage builds toward a conclusion.
Fix Pattern
- Pause before the options and say what the paragraph is doing.
- Summarize the paragraph in one short sentence.
- Reject answers that are only examples, side points, or exaggerated versions of the claim.
Example
If a passage gives several examples of waste reduction and then argues that food rescue should support wider reform, the main idea is not “cities use community fridges.” The main idea is that food rescue is useful, but it should support broader change.
Exercise
- Take one longer CELPIP passage.
- Write a five-word purpose label for each paragraph.
- Write one sentence for the writer’s final position.
- Compare that sentence with the correct main-idea answer.
