Topic Explanation and Use
Core idea
In CELPIP Task 1, the reader should understand two things fast: why you are writing and how you want the reader to react.
Purpose means the job of the email. Are you complaining, requesting, apologizing, inviting, or explaining? Tone means how the email sounds. Most Task 1 emails need a polite, controlled tone. You do not need to sound cold. You do need to sound respectful and clear.
Many students lose marks because they start too vaguely or too emotionally. They write long background lines before the real purpose appears, or they sound angry when the task only needs calm firmness. A better approach is simple: greeting, clear purpose, short context, specific request, polite close.
At B2 level, good tone control is not about rare vocabulary. It is about choosing steady language that fits the reader and the situation.
Use it here
- Open with the reason for writing within the first one or two lines.
- Match the tone to the relationship: polite for managers, staff, organizers, and services.
- Use direct requests, but soften them with polite framing.
Watch it work
Remember this
- Name the purpose early.
- Keep the tone calm even when the problem is frustrating.
- Choose one clear request instead of many weak ones.
- Use polite frames such as I would appreciate it if... and Could you please...
- Close with thanks and a realistic next step.
