CELPIP Reading Distractor Trap Elimination

Intro

Distractors are the main reason many students stay below CLB 8 in CELPIP reading. This lesson teaches a proof-first elimination system.

Examiner Criteria

• Answer must match passage meaning, not only matching vocabulary.
• Incorrect options are rejected with clear textual justification.
• Final choice remains stable during review.

Mistakes

• Choosing the first option that shares a keyword.
• Ignoring qualifiers like “mostly”, “only”, or “likely”.
• Switching from a proven answer to a less-supported answer during review.

Strategy

1. Locate the answer zone with keywords.
2. Read one sentence before and after the evidence line.
3. Eliminate options that overstate, narrow, or reverse the meaning.

Example

Passage meaning: “Most respondents preferred option B after trying both options.”

Distractor: “All respondents preferred option B.”

Correct logic: “Most” does not equal “all”, so the distractor is wrong.

2. For each question, write one sentence explaining why each wrong option is wrong.
3. Keep only answers that have direct evidence support.
