Intro
Inference questions test your ability to read implied meaning. CLB 6 readers often lose marks by adding outside assumptions.
Examiner Criteria
- Inference is grounded in textual clues.
- Selected answer is the best supported interpretation.
- Personal opinion is not used as evidence.
Mistakes
- Choosing what “sounds true” in real life.
- Ignoring tone markers such as “however”, “despite”, and “likely”.
- Confusing direct fact questions with inference questions.
Strategy
- Underline two textual clues before looking at options.
- Convert clues into one short inference sentence.
- Pick the option that matches your evidence sentence most closely.
Example
Clue 1: “The manager repeatedly delayed implementation.” Clue 2: “Staff confidence dropped over three months.”
Strong inference: “The delays reduced team confidence.”
Exercise
- Take three inference questions from a practice set.
- Write two clues and one inference sentence for each.
- Compare your inference sentence with the correct answer.
