CELPIP Reading Specific Information vs General Meaning

Intro

CELPIP reading questions switch between detail retrieval and main-meaning interpretation. CLB 6 readers often use the wrong reading mode for the question type.

Examiner Criteria

• Detail questions are answered with precise evidence.
• Main-idea questions are answered from paragraph purpose and overall message.
• Candidate avoids over-reading for simple detail items.

Mistakes

• Reading the whole passage deeply for a detail question.
• Choosing a detail answer for a main-purpose question.
• Missing scope words like “mainly”, “best”, or “overall”.

Strategy

1. Identify question mode first: Detail or General.
2. For Detail mode, scan target lines and verify exact wording.
3. For General mode, summarize paragraph purpose before choosing.

Example

Question: “What is the main purpose of paragraph 3?” Wrong approach: Choose a sentence-level detail. Better approach: Summarize paragraph function, then pick the option that matches the full purpose.

Exercise
