CELPIP Reading Viewpoint Confusion Fix

Separate author viewpoint, quoted opinions, and facts to improve CELPIP reading accuracy.

Intro

Viewpoint confusion is common in CELPIP Part 4. Students read a quoted opinion and treat it as the author’s final position.

Examiner Criteria

  • Distinguish who said what.
  • Identify the author’s final stance accurately.
  • Use discourse markers to track contrast and evaluation.

Mistakes

  • Ignoring attribution words like “according to”, “researchers claim”, or “the author argues”.
  • Treating every sentence as equal weight.
  • Missing contrast markers that signal the writer’s real position.

Strategy

  1. Label each claim as Author, Source, or General Fact.
  2. Highlight contrast words: but, however, although, despite.
  3. Base final answers on the author’s evaluative lines, not quoted examples.

Example

Source claim: “Some analysts believe remote work lowers productivity.” Author stance: “However, current data suggests hybrid teams maintain output.”

Correct viewpoint: The author supports hybrid productivity, not the analysts’ concern.

Exercise

  1. Read one opinion passage and label each paragraph as Author, Source, or Fact.
  2. Find two contrast markers.
  3. Write one sentence describing the final author viewpoint.
